Job Description

As a Freshwater Operative, you will follow safe working practices to ensure a safe working environment for all employees. Adhering to the Group Health & Safety policy is crucial. You will contribute to a workplace culture that prioritizes health and safety by following all instructions, using the “Good Catch” system, being aware of the Monthly 100 system, reporting incidents as per SSC H&S procedures, ensuring personal actions do not put oneself or others at risk, and monitoring site health and safety while recommending improvements.

Shifts

* 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off

* Accomodation Provided

* Monday to Friday 8am-5pm

* Overtime and on call available

Technical Standards

You will operate to the highest standards of husbandry, biosecurity, food safety, and quality. Supporting the Site Manager and Senior Operatives in embedding these standards throughout the site is essential.

Fish Husbandry and Welfare

* Check conditions of holding units.

* Maintain and adjust environmental controls, including monitoring and controlling water flows and quality.

* Monitor and record environmental parameters.

* Handle fish during routine operations and recognize signs of stress.

* Ensure fish welfare standards are met.

* Perform husbandry operations such as grading, vaccination, transfers, and stocking fish into holding units.

* Conduct specialist operations like salt testing and ATPase sampling.

* Identify and rectify signs and causes of stress in fish.

* Respond to alarm situations.

Fish Health

Adhering to site biosecurity protocols is vital. You will collect, prepare, and analyze routine samples and treat health problems in fish.

Environmental Stewardship

You will measure and record environmental conditions accurately, identify stress in fish and signs of predator activity, and minimize impact through maintenance of holding units. Participation in environmental consents in accordance with legislation and collecting data for containment audits is required.

Feed, Feeding, Fish Growth and Development

* Receive and store feed, recording quantities.

* Perform and record sample weights, calculate average sample weights, biomass, and condition factors.

* Feed fish according to the feed plan and assess feed intake.

* Adapt feed plans based on environmental conditions.

* Input basic data into FishTalk and analyze data as requested.

Systems Maintenance and Structures

Checking conditions of holding units and responding to emergencies as per company procedures is essential. You will identify and report required maintenance during daily checks and lift, transfer, and position loads and control equipment.

Personal and Workforce Development

You will attend all required courses and operate machinery only when authorized and trained to do so. Working professionally with others, developing and maintaining personal performance, participating in the performance appraisal process, and demonstrating good interpersonal, team-building, and, where applicable, team-leading skills are expected. Providing feedback to the site manager when requested and actively participating in workforce and company developments is also required.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

* Sound understanding of Health and Safety issues.

* Interest in aquaculture and fish husbandry.

* Responsible attitude.

* Ability to work weekends, on-call rotas, and flexible hours as workload dictates.

Preferable Criteria:

* Technical expertise in aquaculture and fish husbandry, preferably with previous RAS experience.

* Good practical skills.
