Job Description
As the Deputy Picture Editor you will play a key role in the daily production of TMG titles output by identifying key images using a variety of sources. You will assist the Picture Editor daily to ensure efficient running of the picture desk, and deputise for them in their absence.
The right candidate will have an excellent eye for a winning photograph, good news instincts, a strong understanding of how to construct visual packages for both digital and print and bring an enthusiastic “can do, will do” attitude to the role.
Key responsibilities
Identify the best images for publication and taking a proactive approach to ensure they are published across our platforms
Lead a team of visual journalists in discovering exclusive content
Initiate ideas for visual story production
Liaise with department editors to ensure fast and accurate publishing plans are realised
Support the Picture Editor with the day-to-day management and development of the picture desk team
Deputise for the Picture Editor as required
Build engaging presentations of the best images to pitch to executive editors at news conference
Ensure photographers are commissioned wisely to ensure the best results for the day’s news stories
Monitor the internal and external picture sources ensuring The Telegraph is maximising its publication opportunities.
Crop and prepare images for web display
Work shifts based over seven days including weekend work – a high level of flexibility will be required in order to respond to news events.
Key skills
Extensive experience of news photo editing, building photo packages, and a good eye for composition.
Strong interest and knowledge of current affairs, sport and entertainment.
Sound industry knowledge including regional, national and international contacts.
Content management systems experience necessary.
Intermediate Photoshop skills
Comfortable working as part of a team but able to work independently and use initiative.
Able to work quickly, accurately, to tight deadlines and under pressure.
Some experience of team management is desirable.
